At A Glance

When someone says Isuzu these days, there are only two models that come to mind. One of them is the D-Max, and it's one of the toughest trucks out there. With its well-earned reputation for robustness and reliability, it's no surprise that the D-Max remains to be a popular choice in the pick-up segment.

The second-generation D-Max came out in international markets in 2011 and was launched in the Philippines in 2013. Compared to the previous generation, this one was a leap forward in terms of design, space, and capability. It could even be said that it was one of the models that paved the way for the new wave of pick-ups.

Isuzu took that a step further by giving the D-Max a facelift and new engines a few years later. The looks were freshened up, and the engines received a much-needed horsepower and torque boost. At the same time, the new powertrains were much cleaner and refined than before. The second-generation D-Max bowed out in 2021 to make way for the all-new third-generation model.

Pros:

> Near bulletproof reliability

> High fuel efficiency

> Wide variety of models

> Proven robustness and durability

> Strong performance from BluePower engines

> Facelift models were well equipped

Cons:

> 2.5-liter 4WD models on the sluggish side

> Five-speed automatics in pre-facelift models need attention

> Some creaks and squeaks in high-milage models

> Harsh ride

Good buy or Goodbye?

If it's comfort and luxuries you're looking for in a pick-up, you're not exactly looking in the right place if you're checking out the Isuzu D-Max. The interior is made out of hard plastics with not much in the way of soft-touch materials. Not only that, its rear suspension was made for punishing work, not ride comfort. However, its those “flaws” that make the D-Max a truck you can count on when the going gets tough.

Isuzu has a well-earned reputation for reliability and durability, and its evident in this generation of the D-Max. You'll often see relatively young units raking in over 10,000 kilometers in less than a year. It's also pretty common to see these trucks having double the mileage of an average car. However, there are a few things you need to look out for. The five-speed automatics in pre-facelift models need more attention and maintenance, and the chassis can get squeaky as the miles pile on.

As with most of these pick-ups, it's recommended to the the later, facelifted models. These units are typically well equipped and they benefit from the cleaner Bluepower turbodiesel engines. Not only that, those engines make more power, so it's a win-win. Yes, the ride is harsh, but the pros definitely outweighs the cons. Needless to say, you need to check out the D-Max at the very least if you're shopping for a pick-up.
