Hyundai Eon at a glance

If there is one car in recent history that fits the very definition of the automobile, that would be the Hyundai Eon. If a car's sole purpose in life is to transport people in the most efficient and affordable way possible, then look no further than Hyundai's tiniest hatchback. Introduced in 2012, the Eon was the least expensive new car you can buy during the years it was for sale. It offered no-frills transport for aa low price, which is exactly what the masses need. At the time of its launch, it undercut its competitors by a significant margin, making it a hit among first-time car buyers and those who just need a basic set of wheels. Despite being the least expensive new car on sale at the time, it still had decent equipment levels. The Eon remained mostly unchanged throughout its life, although production shifted to the Philippines at some point. The Eon was eventually discontinued in 2019 with no successor.

Good buy or goodbye?

In the second-hand market, the Hyundai Eon is one of the most affordable cars you can get that's under ten years old. If it's a basic set of wheels you need, then the Eon is a worthwhile option, especially if you just want to get from point A to B. It's easy to drive, cheap to service, and very efficient thanks to its tiny 0.8-liter engine. There are a few concerns about the Eon, though. It didn't come with a lot of safety features, and the most you got was one airbag in the top of the line version. Also, that small engine means it struggles with a full load when going uphill. And if you're hoping to get it with an automatic, you're out of luck. The Eon never came with an automatic option. But perhaps the one thing you need to watch out for when looking at used Eon is neglect. More often than not, used examples are abused or lack maintenance. Buyer beware.

Pros:

- Low prices for used examples - The very definition of affordable personal transport - High fuel efficiency - Easy to drive, Easy to manuever - Extremely low running and maintenance costs - Generally reliable

Cons:

- Steep ramps is its biggest enemy - No automatic option - One airbag only in top of the line model - No anti-lock brakes - Used examples are often abused or lack maintenance
