When it comes to sales, the Toyota Fortuner is the king of the chart. For years, it is the country's best-selling truck-based mid-size SUV, and almost nothing can knock it off its throne. The second-generation Fortuner was built on the strength of its predecessor while eliminating most of the weaknesses from before. The present model has been around for quite some time now and received a facelift in 2020. Those versions gained more power in select models, along with additional variants and design lines.

It is the best-seller in its class, but is it the best SUV among its competitors? Probably not. The Fortuner loses points for quality faults in early models and a hard ride regardless of the variant. The initial models also lag behind most of its competitors in terms of power, but later models have rectified that. So, it’s not perfect, but why is it still worth it? As cliché as it sounds, you can't go wrong with a Toyota. The Fortuner has a proven track record for reliability, and Toyota's wide network means spare parts are available just about everywhere. Yes, the ride is hard, but it is an improvement over the first-generation model, and it feels less truck-like to drive. It may not be outstanding in a particular area, but it's all-rounded character makes it an SUV to consider.

- Proven reliability - Easy parts availability - More variants = more choice - Strong resale values - Over 200 HP in top-spec, post-2020 models - Gas option for those who don't like diesel (pre-2020

- Early models had transmission software problems - Not the most fully-equipped SUV in its class - Drum brakes in pre-2018 models - Peeling trim - Stiff ride - Bulky third-row seats eat up cargo space when stowed
