2022 Toyota Camry Goes All Hybrid For PH

Updated on April 25 2024

The mid-size sedan class might not be as popular as it once was, but seeing any of those cars on the road still commands presence. The longest-running cars in the class are the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, and the latter just got an update.

Toyota Motor Philippines has launched the facelifted Camry that was released internationally a few months back. From the outside, the styling gets a few tweaks. There's a new front bumper featuring a reshaped center intake and a pair of chrome slats on the side. Also new for 2022 is the slimmer grille and new headlight elements.

As for the rest of the car, the Camry wears new wheels for the 2022 model year. The tail lights are also slightly tweaked, along with the rear bumper. But the important exterior change here are the Toyota badges on the car. On the new Camry, the badges are blue, and that tells you something about its most important feature, the engine.

From now on, the Camry will only be offered as a hybrid in the Philippines. It's a bold move from Toyota given that the mid-size sedan market is a largely conservative group. The hybrid powertrain in the Camry uses a 2.5-liter engine and an electric motor. The electric motor alone makes 88 PS and helps the car achieve a combined power output of 211 PS and 221 Nm of torque. Because of that change, the variant is now called the Camry 2.5HV instead of 2.5V. It shifts with what Toyota calls the e-CVT.

Aside from the hybrid powertrain, the interior gets a few changes as well. Toyota got rid of the faux light brown wood trim in favor of darker-looking (faux) wood. But the biggest upgrade here is the touchscreen. It's no longer the common unit shared with other Toyota models. Instead, the screen is now from JBL. It now includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and on-board navigation.

The 2022 Toyota Camry is only available in one variant in the Philippines. The 2.5HV carries an SRP of PHP 2,335,000. With electric power shaping up to be the future, hybrid power might be a good transition to that.
