Mitsubishi Strada - At A Glance
For years, the Mitsubishi Strada has been butting heads with the Toyota Hilux. But when the current generation came out in 2014, it could be said that it represented a new direction for the pick-up truck genre. It was radical and looked dynamic, which is something that couldn't be said about pick-ups before. The 2014 to present version of the Strada also paved the way for the third-generation Montero Sport that arrived in 2016. With that, the strengths of the Strada also made its way to the popular SUV. Along the way, Mitsubishi gave it a few enhancements to keep the customers coming to the showrooms. For example, Mitsubishi slowly phased in the cleaner and more powerful MIVEC diesel in the Strada range starting 2016. It also gained more standard equipment along the way. However, 2019 would be a big year for the Strada in the Philippines as it marked the launch of the heavily updated and facelifted version. The Athlete variant was added in 2020.
Good buy or goodbye?
Despite being stylish for a pick-up, the Strada remains to be a capable hauler. That said, the higher-spec versions are more of “lifestyle” pick-ups due to their lower payload capacities. Also, not a lot of models have a payload capacity of beyond 1,000 kilograms, somewhat limiting its practicality. The bed is also one of the smallest in its class, but that's not to say it can't carry a lot of cargo. If you regularly carry loads over 1,000 kilograms, then the Strada won't be much good for you. However, if it's a light hauler that you need, you won't go wrong with the Strada. For the most part, you won't be maxing out a pick-ups payload anyway, and the Strada's sub-1,000 kg limit is still good enough for most. In return, you get a truck that's one of the most maneuverable and best-riding in its class. Go for the post-2016 models and you can even get it with the cleaner, more efficient, and more powerful 2.4-liter MIVEC turbodiesel engine. Our recommendation? Get anything with the MIVEC turbodiesel. A 2WD GLS A/T should be good enough for most. But of you're willing to shell out more, it's worth going for the Athlete version if you can get past the love-hate stickers on it. The ride and handling are noticeably better in those compared to the standard models.
Pros:
- One of the best-riding pick-ups in its class - Class-first variable valve timing diesel engine - Maneuverability - High fuel efficiency, especially the 2WD models - Improved ride and handling in Athlete versions
Cons:
- Narrow body, relatively tight interior width-wise - Relatively light payload - Smallest bed in its class - Look out for Exhaust Gas Regulator (EGR) or Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor hiccups
