Old vs. New: Toyota Avanza

Old vs. New: Toyota Avanza

Updated on April 26 2024

Toyota has just unveiled the all-new Avanza. Now in its third-generation, it could be said that this version is a quantum leap from the outgoing model. For starters, it has a totally new chassis among other things.

But the spec sheet shows a whole heap up changes. Let's take a look at stats of the outgoing and all-new Avanza.

How big is the 2022 Avanza compared to the previous model?

The 2022 Toyota Avanza is a fair bit longer than the outgoing model. First, let's look at the second-generation Avanza's dimensions. It measures 4,190 mm long, 1,660 mm wide, 1,695 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,655 mm. As for the all-new Avanza, it's 4,395 mm long, 1,730 mm wide, 1,700 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,760.

If you put those stats side by side, here's what you get. The 2022 Avanza is 205 mm (8.1 inches) longer, 70 mm (2.6 inches) wider, 5 mm(0.2 inches) taller, and longer between the wheels by 105 mm (4.1 inches). With a much larger exterior, you can expect more space inside this all-new MPV.

What are the features of the 2022 Avanza?

For starters, the 2022 Avanza no longer uses a truck-line ladder frame chassis. Not only that, this MPV is no longer rear-wheel drive. It now shifts to a front-wheel drive layout just like all of its competitors. It's all the more reason to expect more interior space from this generation.

The 2022 Avanza has stepped up in terms of safety. Whereas the outgoing model only has dual airbags and anti-lock brakes, the third-generation model invests more on active safety features. Even the base models come with stability control these days. The high-spec versions add six airbags, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic alert

What are the variants of the 2022 Avanza?

We won't know what the Philippine line-up will be like, but it's likely to be similar to the Indonesia range. For Indonesia, there are four to choose from, six if you include the transmission options. These are the 1.3E M/T, 1.5G M/T, 1.5 G CVT, 1.5G CVT TSS, and 1.5Q CVT Veloz.

Did Toyota change the engine of the 2022 Avanza?

Horsepower figures are still the same but the Toyota NR-series engine gets a mild update. It's now called the 1NR-VE or 2NR-VE, depending on the variant. The 1.3-liter makes 98 PS and 121 Nm of torque, while the 1.5-liter puts out 106 PS and 137 Nm of torque.

As you've seen in the variant range, Toyota has gotten rid of the four-speed automatic. In its place is a CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission. Expect better fuel economy results with this generation. The manual is still a five-speed transmission.

When is the 2022 Avanza coming to the Philippines?

It's still unknown at the moment but it would be a surprise if Toyota Philippines launched it before the end of 2021. With that, the first half of 2022 is a better bet. Should it arrive by then, expect prices for used Avanzas to drop by then. If you're ready to sell your current one for an all-new model, we can help you out through our Sell-My-Car program.
