The 2022 Mazda CX-50 Will Not Replace the CX-5

Updated on July 26 2024

It's no secret that Mazda is pushing towards the premium and luxury market. From the subcompact 2 to the large CX-9, the company wants to make their cars stand out more by highlighting technology and design. Mazda has taken another step in that direction with the CX-50.

The CX-50 is the brand's second upper-premium crossover to be introduced. The first one was the CX-30, which competes in the smaller size category. While it seems that the CX-50 sounds like a CX-5 with a longer name, there is more to it than that.

For instance, the CX-50 is all-wheel drive only, and the smallest engine option is a 2.5-liter. There is also a 2.5-liter turbo version available for this crossover. Mazda has yet to release official horsepower and torque figures for the CX-50, but it's likely similar to the one found in the CX-5. However, Mazda said they will all a hybrid version down the line.

The CX-50 appears longer and wider than the CX-5. Most panels are also unique to this model, particularly the front end and the doors. The crossover also features an evolutionary version of the brand's design language. Its lines are sharper compared to the CX-5, and the angles are sharper as well.

As for the interior, it's not just the CX-5 with more leather inside. Again, the design is made for this model and shows Mazda's philosophy of minimalism. Most buttons have been removed from the center stack but they kept important controls such as the air-conditioning and other vital buttons. The dashboard is slim to give the impression of more space. Mazda also made the infotainment screen wide and low to keep things minimalist.

Production of the CX-50 will begin in 2022. Do note that this model will not replace the CX-5. The automaker will keep both models as they transition towards the more premium market. It's also unknown if the Philippines will get this model but there is a good chance it will make its way here.
