With the local automotive market vastly expanding every year, it’s difficult to choose the right car to buy. Sedans are a big hit with buyers, as they are perfect for both city and highway driving. Many options are from the premium brands, but luckily, there are a lot of affordable sedans as well with features to match.
5. Mitsubishi Mirage G4
Based on the Mirage hatchback, the Mirage G4 is powered by a 1.2L 3-cylinder MIVEC engine producing 78 PS, and 100 Nm of torque, and can be fitted with a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Despite being down on power compared to its rivals, Mitsubishi takes pride in the Mirage’s phenomenal fuel efficiency of 14.8 Km/L in the city, and 22.8 Km/L on the highway, beating many of its rivals. While features such as Android Auto and Apple Carplay come as standard, it lacks advanced driver assistance systems.
Relative to its hatchback counterpart, the Mirage G4 has an extra three inches of legroom, providing more space for the rear passengers. Its trunk capacity of 368 liters, however, is quite small compared to most of its rivals. Starting at P769,000, it is one of the cheapest cars currently on the market, making it an attractive prospect for budget conscious buyers.
4. Toyota Vios
Known for its outstanding reliability, the Toyota Vios has been one of the best-selling vehicles in the country for several years. The Vios is available with two gasoline engine options: a 1.3L and a 1.5L. Both engines can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT.
In terms of interior comfort, everything is familiar and easy to use. The cabin is simple, well laid out, and is covered with durable feeling hard plastics. This translates to a less premium feel, but is still more than enough for most buyers. The added benefit of everything being easier to clean is also a plus.
Its safety standard on the other hand stands out from most of its rivals. With an ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) rating of 5 stars, it is definitely one of the safer economy cars.
The Toyota Vios comes in many variants ranging from the 1.3 Base M/T (priced at P686,000) to the 1.5 G CVT (priced at P985,000), and even a special Vios GR-S model, giving buyers a wide range of options depending on which one is best suited for them.
3. Honda City
The Honda City has always been renowned for being the sportiest car in the class. It has class leading handling, and also class leading power coming from its 1.5L 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine paired to a CVT making 121 PS and 145 Nm of torque.
While some variants of the Honda City exceed the one million Peso mark, buyers with a tighter budget who still want the sporty sedan are given the option of the Honda City S CVT, priced only at P938,000. This base variant may be the entry-level City, but it still features modern amenities such as an 8 inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), as well as safety features such as Vehicle Stability Assist, and Agile Handling Assist.
2. Nissan Almera
The Nissan Almera is one the newly updated models in the segment. The all new Almera, powered by a 1.0L Turbocharged 3 cylinder engine utilizes newer technology to give excellent fuel economy at 13.7 Km/L in the city, and 23 Km/L on the highway, without compromising power. It provides an acceptable 100 PS and 152 Nm of torque, despite having the smallest engine in its class.
The interior also has a premium feel to it, with soft touch points, and contrast stitching embedded on the dash. Buyers will enjoy convenience features such as an automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a partly digital instrument cluster which Nissan calls the Advanced Drive-Assist display.
The VE Turbo CVT variant (priced at P998,000) contains key safety features such as collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and collision warning assist, giving the driver extra confidence on the road, while still being within budget.
1. Geely Emgrand
Although the Geely Emgrand is priced similar to most subcompact cars, its size is much larger than most of its rivals. Size wise, it can easily be compared to sedans in a segment above it, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis, or the Honda Civic.
The Geely Emgrand is powered by a 1.5L 4 cylinder engine with 102 PS and 142 Nm of torque, driven by either a 5-speed manual or CVT. The Emgrand Premium (priced at P999,000) stands out in its category too, with luxuries such as projector LED headlights and taillights, DRLs, leather seats, a power adjustable driver seat, sunroof, intelligent air conditioning system, CN95 cabin filters, and an 8 inch infotainment screen.
This model not only has extensive creature comforts, but also has an abundance of safety technology such as 6 airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), hill start assist, a rear view parking camera with reverse sensors, and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
From the frugal Mitsubishi Mirage to the premium feeling Geely Emgrand, the Philippine sub-compact sedan market is now more competitive than ever. These cars are affordable, yet provide tech and safety features unheard of in the years past. No matter which car you choose from our top picks of 2022, you are guaranteed that you will get your money’s worth.
